When do babies get teeth? It seems like we are always anticipating the next baby milestone. After rolling over, sleeping through the night and sitting up, the next thing we anticipate is getting that first little pearly white!
When that first tooth should come in, is a common question of new parents and a somewhat difficult one to answer because the timing is different for every baby. There are certain guidelines however, and as long as your baby falls within them, there is no need for concern. Baby teeth do not always erupt in the same order either. Again, there is a general order, but your baby may decide to be different.
Cuisinart Food Processor
Altogether, there are 20 baby, or primary teeth. Usually, the first ones to come through are the two bottom middle teeth. These generally appear between 6 and 10 months of age, and are followed by the top two middle teeth and then the next two on either side.
The eye teeth or cuspids generally appear between 16 and 22 months, but the first molars often appear before they do. Babies usually have their first molars by the age of 18 months. Second molars come last, and will not likely appear until after the age of two.
It is important to take good care of baby teeth as they are the foundation for healthy second teeth. Because baby teeth provide the space for secondary teeth, losing a baby tooth too soon can result in the second tooth coming in at an odd angle and may cause crowding of the adult teeth. Chewing difficulties and speech problems can sometimes result from early loss of baby teeth.
My best advice to new parents is to enjoy every day and every baby step along the way. While it is quite alright to wonder "when do babies get teeth?", don't let it worry you if your baby is a little slower than some others. Just relax and enjoy that toothless grin. It will be gone soon enough!
