The Pros and Cons of Online Shopping

Online shopping is becoming more and more popular each year as people embrace the convenience, selection, and low prices available when shopping online. In this article I speak to some of the pros and cons of online shopping.

Cuisinart Food Processor

There is something to be said for walking into a physical store and being able to see, touch, and easily ask questions about a product. One could argue that brick and mortar shopping is a more engaging experience, often filled with background music of some sort, along with the sights and sounds of other customers and clerks available to provide assistance when needed. Different products can be compared side by side with very little effort. One benefit of brick and mortar shopping is its organization, which allows one to locate the right department and the right shelf pretty easily. Everything the store offers is made available via a layout of straight-forward, logical departments. Online sites provide an organizational layout and text search capability, but this different way of locating a product of interest is one online shopping difference that takes some getting used to. Other benefits of brick front shopping is being able to get out of the house, exercise a bit, breathe some outdoor air and avoid cabin fever (this type of activity was quite important in the winter when I lived in Chicago).

Cuisinart Food Processor

People that are cautious in nature might find certain features of online shopping a bit hard to get used to, such as getting acclimated to what would be the equivalent of searching for merchandise with tunnel blinders that only permit a very narrow view of what is directly ahead of one's eyes. Brick and mortar stores are physically arranged to make it more probable that certain items will be seen more than others. Online stores also provide focus on certain products over others. Most websites contain product descriptions, but the descriptions can be either too general or too detailed, making it difficult to compare two or more products on their features. If the shopper has a question that is appropriate for a human being such as a clerk in a store, where does the online customer go to ask the question? There is something lost in not having an informed person available to provide an immediate answer. Many popular online shopping sites now provide customer reviews-independent reviews provided by customers that have bought each product. These reviews go a long way toward providing enough detailed information about a product so one can determine whether or not to purchase it.

In the USA online shopping malls and websites address the limitations found in the online shopping process by offering near enough to a no-questions-asked return policy to ensure the happiness of the online customer. Even so, one downside of online shopping is having to wait to obtain the product, depending on whatever mode of shipping is selected. If a product needs to be refunded or returned for whatever reason, there's the inconvenience of returning the product. This often involves a phone call and trip to the local post office, after which one waits again to either receive a replacement or refund. Compare this to just running the item and receipt back to a local brick front store and having either a refund or an exchanged product in hand within a few minutes.

Let's talk about security. In a physical store, cash can be used, and if a debit or credit card is used the shopper gets to see who processes his or her card. Also, one is usually not required to provide personal information such as a name and physical address. Not so with online shopping, as the item must be addressed and delivered to a person at an address. Cash cannot be used online, so what entity processes the card and captures the personal information over the web? And how well is the personal information protected? One way to greatly reduce risk when shopping online is to use virtual credit card numbers. These numbers are provided by credit card issuers such as Citi and Discover, and can be used only once, so even if the credit card information is captured by some other entity during the transaction, it cannot be used to complete a second purchase. I use virtual credit card numbers when I shop online, and I highly recommend this practice.

Let us look at the benefits of shopping online. If the four-wheeled vehicle in one's driveway is expensive to gas up, then it's an obvious plus to be able to shop the virtual market and save transportation costs. It is also a "greener" arrangement-computers emit little or no carbon even when powered. For those who find it tiring to deal with crowds, there are none in cyberspace, and no lines to wait in during checkout. The magical online domain has no weather to hinder one, either-all shopping is done within a sheltered environment, safe from inclement weather. And there's no need to worry about keeping one's children together and in sight when online shopping. But perhaps the best feature of all is the cost savings that can be realized online. Online items can more often that not be purchased and shipped for substantially less, because the price doesn't include any overhead costs associated with having a physical brick and mortar store. In most cases there is also no sales tax either, unless the merchant maintains some type of physical presence in the state where the item is purchased. For example, Amazon.com only charges sales tax on orders that are shipped to Kansas, North Dakota, New York or Washington, and Overstock.com only charges sales tax on orders that are shipped to Utah. To sweeten the deal, many merchants offer special online coupons, coupon codes and promotional codes that provide additional discounts.

As an example of the money that can be saved when shopping online, I bought a "Cuisinart Prep 11 Plus" food processor and used the online comparison shopping engine at Shopzilla.com to find the best deal, which was at Etronics.com for 2 with no sales tax and free shipping. A local Sears store had it listed at 9.99 and would have charged about in sales tax for a total of 6. In this particular case I saved (20%) shopping online and using Shopzilla to put online stores in competition for my business. And it only took me about 10 minutes of effort. With the advent of cheaper computing and increasing levels of online competition, people are generally becoming used to accessing the world through the eyes of cyberspace. So it is the coming thing, and a tide that is not likely to be turned. We as a society have adapted to other significant changes over time, such as the advent and convenience of air travel, trains and automobiles over horses, and online shopping is yet another paradigm shift we will adapt to.

In summary, when looking at the pros and cons of online shopping, the pros outweigh the cons, especially for items that are widely available and for which the best price is being sought. Shoppers save time and money buying what they need online and virtual store owners can run their businesses on far less overhead. The fact that the pros outweigh the cons is evident when one looks at the sharp increases in online shopping that have occurred on a global basis over the past few years.

Preparing For Your Next Caribbean Cruise

The excitement of having a Caribbean cruise vacation can be overwhelming that one tends to forget many things that need to be done before the trip. Sit still for a while and make a list of what needs to be done and the details that goes into each one of them. Before you contact the different cruise lines, list down the questions that you will ask them regarding the different Caribbean Cruise offers, and be ready to note down the answers to your questions. You will need to know the cruise itineraries, the planned activities for the passengers and what you need to pack for your trip.

Cuisinart Food Processor

Of course you would like to compare the offers of the different cruise lines and choose the one that most fits your budget, your preferred Caribbean Cruise itineraries and the planned passenger activities. The customer service representatives of cruise lines are more than willing to answer any and all questions, so don't hesitate to ask them about the smallest details that nags you about the trip.

Cuisinart Food Processor

Make an early reservation for your trip, including the Caribbean Cruise activities that you would like to engage in during the trip. Be sure to ask if there are additional fees, insurance or risks involved in other on board and on land activities that you would like to participate in. This way you can also check your budget and make your own plans ahead of time.

Get ready to pack everything you will need! Knowing your itinerary and the schedule of activities, make it easy to identify what you will need to bring for this trip. An assortment of clothes for beach wear, evening wear for on-board dinners, casual or sports wear for excursions and on board the ship are needed. You will need to fit everything into your suitcase, but how?

One way to save space and lighten your luggage is to choose mix and match clothes that can be worn interchangeably. Pack a few pair of shorts, skirts and pants with some tops, all in one color scheme that you can mix and match in all the on board and on land activities during the Caribbean Cruise. Men's evening wear can be rented on the ship and the women can bring a basic evening dress of their choice color and an assortment of accessories to go with it on different evenings.

Be sure to include your medicines (if any) a camera, sunscreen and sunglasses on your packing list. And of course, don't forget to bring some cash and your credit card!

Go over your list again and make sure that you have everything you need for this great vacation getaway. On the night before, get a relaxing sleep and be on time to enjoy the great adventure of the Caribbean Cruise. Don't forget to take pictures!

Cuisinart CH-4DC Elite Collection 4-Cup Chopper/Grinder, Die Cast Overview

More convenient than ever, the Cuisinart Elite collection 4-cup chopper/grinder effortlessly handles a variety of food preparation tasks such as chopping, grinding and pureeing. The smartpower blade has a patented auto-reversing ability with a sharp edge for delicate chopping and pureeing soft foods, while the blunt edge grinds through spices and harder foods. Additionally, the revolutionary bladelock system feature keeps the blade secure during processing and pouring. Small enough to keep on the counter, the 4-cup work bowl is the ideal size for many food prep tasks. The handle, touchpad controls, and dishwasher safe parts make it even more convenient to operate and clean. It's cutting-edge food prep from Cuisinart.

From the Manufacturer

In 1973, Cuisinart expanded the potential of every American kitchen with the introduction of the food processor. Now, the folks who revolutionized the way you cook are back with a collection that takes power and innovation to the next level.

The Cuisinart Elite Chopper/Grinder handles a variety of food preparation tasks, such as chopping, grinding, pureeing, emulsifying, and blending. The 4 cup capacity holds enough ingredients to perform all your basic food prep tasks. The patented SmartPower auto-reversing blade features an incredibly sharp edge for delicate chopping and pureeing soft foods. The reverse edge is blunt, to grind through spices and harder foods. And the exclusive BladeLock System enables the blade to lock into the bowl, so you can now pour ingredients out of the bowl without first having to remove the blade. The powerful high-speed motor works hard and fast to accomplish small jobs with ease. Chop herbs, onions or garlic; grind spices or hard cheese; puree baby foods; blend homemade mayo and flavored butter -- all in one compact machine that is small enough to keep on the counter. You have virtually unlimited options with the Cuisinart Elite Collection Chopper/Grinder.

Features
  • Convenient Size, Compact Design: Small enough to keep on the counter, the 4-cup work bowl is the ideal size for many food prep tasks. The handle, touchpad controls, and the dishwasher safe parts make it even more convenient to operate and clean.
  • Optimum Safety: No need to remove the blade after processing! The exclusive BladeLock System secures the blade in place for easy user-friendly pouring. Pour all you like -- these blades aren’t going anywhere. The patented blade system saves you the time and hassle of removing them before pouring out those potentially messy soups and sauces.
  • Simplicity: The Chop/Grind touchpad controls and patented auto-reversing SmartPower blade offer powerful processing options at the touch of a button.
Tips for Better Food Processing
Food size: Always cut large pieces of food into smaller pieces of even size -- about 1/2 an inch -- to produce a uniform chop.
Chop and Grind Function
Bowl fill: Do not overload the work bowl; processed food should not reach more than two-thirds of the way up the work bowl. Please note: because of the powerful motor, it is recommended to use one hand to support the chopper/grinder during operation.
Chop vs. Grind: Use the Chop function for chopping, pureeing and mixing. It is the right choice, for example, for chopping soft, fragile food such as herbs, celery, onions, garlic and most cheeses. It is also the right choice for pureeing cooked vegetables, making mayonnaise, and mixing salad dressing. Use the Grind function for grinding spices, and for chopping hard foods such as peppercorns, seeds, chocolate and nuts.
Pulse vs. Continuous-hold: Pulsing is best when you are using the chop function. Two or three pulses are often enough. Be sure to check the food frequently to prevent over processing. If you over-process, you are likely to get a watery paste instead of a fine chop. A continuous-hold is best when you are using the grind function. Depending on the food, you may have to operate the unit for several seconds to achieve the desired results -- or as long as 20 seconds for some seeds. When operating in continuous-hold, use a pulse action every 10 seconds to allow food to drop to the bottom of the work bowl. This provides more consistent results. Never operate the unit continuously for longer than one minute at a time.
Adding liquid: You can add liquids such as water, oil or flavoring while the machine is running. For example, you might want to add oil when making mayonnaise or salad dressing, or you could add vanilla or alcohol when making frozen yogurt. Pour the liquid through one of the two openings in the cover. Please note: only add liquid through one opening at a time. The other opening must be left unobstructed to allow air to escape. If both opening are blocked, liquid cannot flow smoothly into the bowl.
Removing food from the sides of the bowl: Occasionally food will stick to the sides of the bowl as you process. Stop the machine to clear the food away. Once the blade has stopped, remove the cover and use the included spatula to scrape the food from the sides of the bowl back into the center. Do not put hands into bowl unless unit is unplugged.

Quick Start Guide
  1. Place the work bowl firmly on the motor base. Opening the at the back of the bowl must face column at the back of the Chopper/Grinder. Turn bowl counterclockwise to lock in place.
  2. Insert the blade assembly. Carefully pick up the blade by its hub and place on the center stem until it drops to the bottom of the stem. Firmly push to lock the blade into position. NEVER TOUCH THE BLADE ITSELF AND NOTE THE BLADE IS NOT PERMANENTLY LOCKED.
  3. Place food in the work bowl. Be sure the food is cut into small pieces, and the bowl is not overloaded.
  4. Lock the cover into position.
  5. Press the appropriate Chop or Grind control, depending on the food you are processing.
  6. When you have finished processing the food, stop the machine by releasing the control button.
  7. ONCE THE BLADE STOPS MOVING, unplug the unit.
  8. Remove cover and work bowl
    1. Turn work bowl cover clockwise to remove.
    2. Turn work bowl clockwise to unlock and lift lid off base.
Note: thicker ingredients can be removed while work bowl is still on base.
  9. To remove liquids and sauces from bowl: simply pour ingredients out of work bowl. The convenient BladeLock System keeps the blade safely in place.
  10. To remove thicker ingredients from bowl: Carefully remove the blade assembly by holding the handle on the top of the sheath and gently pulling up to disengage blade lock. Remove food with spatula.
Tips: Always process foods in order, from dry to wet, to avoid having to clean bowl and blade between each task. Never operate the Cuisinart Elite Collection Chopper/Grinder without ingredients in the work bowl.

The BladeLock System
Cleaning and Storage
To simplify cleaning, rinse the work bowl, cover, and blade immediately after each use. Wash blade assembly, work bowl, cover, and spatula in warm soapy water. Rinse and dry. Use caution when washing the blade.
Make Hummus in Minutes
Avoid leaving the blade in soapy water where it may disappear from sight. The work bowl, cover, blade assembly, and spatula can be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher. Wipe the motor base clean with a damp sponge or cloth. Dry it immediately. Never submerge the motor base or plug in water or other liquid.
The Cuisinart Elite Collection Chopper/Grinder stores neatly on the countertop in a minimum of space. When it is not in use, be sure to leave it unplugged. The hidden cord storage underneath the motor base will help to keep excess cord off the countertop. Store the unit assembled to prevent loss of parts. Store the blades out of reach of children.

Make a Delicious Starbucks Frappuccino Coffee Drink and Almond Biscotti at Home

The Frappuccino didn't take long to become one of the best selling drinks in the world. The name has even become a "catch all" for a milk based coffee drink in many people's minds, often just called a "frap."

Cuisinart Food Processor

The Short History of Starbucks
The first Starbucks opened in 1971 in the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle. That's the place where they throw the fish. Hope none of those landed in the coffee. ;) The name, Starbucks, comes from Herman Melville's Moby Dick, the classic American novel about the 19th century whaling industry. That's why they have the Mermaid on the logo. Howard Schultz joined Starbucks in 1982. On a trip to Italy, he visited Milan's famous espresso bars and was impressed with their popularity and culture. He returned home and added Lattes and Mochas to Starbucks and Seattle goes coffee-crazy.

Cuisinart Food Processor

The rest of the world quickly follows and today Starbucks has more than 15,000 locations across the globe.
The History of the Frappuccino
Starbucks acquired the rights to a frozen coffee drink similar and the trademarked name, Frappuccino, when it bought out the Coffee Connection of Boston, a chain with 24-stores mostly around New England. A pretty good deal in hindsight.

The original Frap, however, was completely different from the one that Starbucks serves. The name, Frappuccino, is a combination of frappe and cappuccino. An original cappuccino is a strong Italian coffee drink topped with frothed milk -- and still served at Starbucks and every other coffee bar. Frappe is either taken from frappé, a Greek coffee-based milkshake, or from the local New England term for a thick milkshake, frappe. Or perhaps both. Cinnabon serves similar drinks called Mochalatta and Caramelatta and Dunkin' Donuts also has a drink called Coolatta .

So I suppose this is actually 4 recipes in 1. Cool.

Starbucks Frappuccino Recipe
Ingredients
1/2 cup fresh Espresso
2 1/2 cups low fat Milk (2 percent)
1/4 cup granulated Sugar
1 tablespoon dry Pectin (this adds no taste and can easily be left out. What it does is make it "thick")

Directions

Combine all of the ingredients in a pitcher or covered container.
Stir or shake until sugar is dissolved.
Chill and serve cold.

To make the "Mocha" variety:
Add a pinch (1/16 teaspoon) of cocoa powder to the mixture before combining.
This copy will be even more authentic if you use Starbucks beans and grind them yourself just before brewing.

Starbuck's Almond Biscotti
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup chopped or slivered almonds, toasted in a 350 degree oven for 7-10 minutes, until fragrant, and cooled
3 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon each: vanilla and almond extract
Pinch of salt

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix flour, sugar, nuts and baking powder and pinch of salt either in the food processor or mixer or even by hand.
Whisk eggs and extracts in another bowl until well beaten.
Add egg mixture to flour mixture and process or beat just until combined. Mixture will be sticky and thick.
Grease or spray a cookie sheet.
Divide dough into two parts and transfer to cookie sheet.
With floured hands, shape into 8" long, 1/2" high loaves.
If desired, sprinkle with a bit more of granulated or raw sugar.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until pale golden and center of loaf is firm when touched.
Remove from cookie sheet and cool.
Place on cutting board and cut into 1/2" thick slices on the diagonal.
Arrange cookies cut side down on same sheet.
Bake another 12-18 minutes, until cookies are turning golden but still a bit soft.
Let cool and store in airtight container.
Makes about 2 dozen.

Cuisinart continues to outshine the competition! The lustrous finish of the new Black Chrome Series is reminiscent of rich, dark, liquid silver. It's unique, elegant, and perfect way to dress up even the most sophisticated kitchens.

Cuisinart DLC-1BCH Mini-Prep Processor, Black Chrome Specifications

The Cuisinart Mini-Prep food processor stands 8 inches tall and just over 4 inches wide, but don't let the size fool you. The base houses a motor so powerful that you need to stabilize it with one hand when using the high setting to whip up a strawberry-banana smoothie for one in less than a minute. The clear plastic prep bowl locks into place with a simple twist, while the blades can be set sharp side up for chopping onions or grating Parmesan cheese, or turned blunt side up for making walnut pesto or whipping up chocolate frosting. The set includes a spatula and a cleaning brush to remove coffee grounds.

For best results, cut ingredients into small, even pieces--about 1/2-inch square or so works well. In general, use the sharp-edge approach for low speed and the blunt side of the blades for high speed. If you need to run the motor for longer than one minute, pause and begin again. The bowl, cover, and blade assembly can all be run through the dishwasher, but watch your fingers when dissembling the machine, as the blades are extremely sharp. --Irene Svete

What Can You Chop in a Food Processor?

Well, what can you chop in a food processor? Almost everything! Over the years I have enjoyed becoming a gourmet cook after learning all the wonderful things that I could do with a food processor. My food processor of choice is Cuisinart. In my opinion, there is none better. Cuisinart has the ability to perform beautifully and make you look like a professional chef.

Cuisinart Food Processor

With that said--What can you chop in a food processor? Let's start with meats. You can buy different cuts of red meat and make your own hamburger. Compare the price per pound of ground meat and then check the cuts of meat that your grocery store may be running a sale on--sometimes you will certainly find that ground meat is more expensive. After all, the store is paying the butcher to grind the meat. But, if you grind your own meat you will know exactly what is in it.

Cuisinart Food Processor

It is so easy to chop your own meat. Simply cube the cut of meat, remove any fat and place the steel knife blade in the bowl of your processor. Turn it on and let it process until you are happy with the results. You control how finely you want to chop or grind. You can make wonderful meat loaves or hamburgers this way.

If you have a baby, you can make fresh baby food. This is done by using the steel knife blade in the bowl and chopping until you have pureed the food, fruits or vegetables.

You can make lovely, smooth, creamy pates the same way. You can also cream soups, by pureeing the vegetables a few batches at a time. Do not fill the bowl up completely, as when you turn it on to process it will run over.

When I make my pesto, I always shred the Parmesan first, by using the shredding disc. If you want finely grated Parmesan, you can chop it with the steel knife blade. Just cut the Parmesan cheese block into cubes and place it in the bowl, process until it is finely grated. Any time that you do a hard cheese, you will find it to be loud at first, so do not be surprised!

I always remove the Parmesan before I add my other ingredients for my pesto and then I add it back in at the last of the recipe. That's a personal choice.

Yes, you can chop ice in a Cuisinart. I usually add a couple of tablespoons of cold water to my ice cubes and then turn it on. This will be very loud at first. You may want to use the pulse button to get the degree of chopped ice that you want.

Food processors are a wonderful, time saving kitchen appliance. If you have one, you will learn many short cuts to great meal preparation, the more that you use it. This is the one appliance I do not want to be without!

Pressing the "grind" button whirls the blade in the other direction so its blunt side can grind nuts, coffee beans, or cheese. It carries an 18-month warranty against defects. The plastic work bowl and lid are dishwasher-safe, but the stainless-steel blade should be hand washed to protect its edges. --Fred Brack

People have been using blender since decades and it is still the number one appliance that is utilized by almost all. Even though lots of other culinary appliances are available in the market, none of them could replace a blender. This is the one device that is used almost on daily basis. Cuisinart is one of the leading manufacturers of the kitchen appliances and it is one of the oldest brands too. They are well known for their blenders. Cuisinart blenders are perfect for almost all day to day cooking. They have been producing variety of blenders to meet the consumer's requirement. Cuisinart blenders are of two types; regular blender and hand held immersion blender. One of the most important parts of a blender is the blade. Blade has the cutting edge which is used to cut and chop the vegetables, mince and puree. This could be the one that can get damaged first. Cuisinart blender has the sharp-edge strong blade that can crush ice, puree and mix with maximum efficiency. Some of the Cuisinart blenders are pre-programmed for smoothies and ice crush functions.

Cuisinart base has good grip that avoids moving the blender while crushing ice. The removable parts of the blender are dishwasher safe and are easy to clean.

The hand held Cuisinart blender gives the flexibility of transportation. Since it is very sleek, it does not need much space. Consumers, who do not have much counter space, prefer the hand held blender as it is easy to store. People can use it while traveling as this blender makes it possible to have fresh smoothies without spending extra bucks. Like the Cuisinart regular blender, it is very easy to clean. The stainless steel shaft is removable and is dishwasher safe too. Cuisinart has another great blender which also can works as a food processor. How to Use a Food Processor

A food processor can be a handy machine to keep in your kitchen. Created in 1970, this appliance has become every kitchen owner's top priority. Cuisinart is a famous brand of home appliances and you can find Cuisinart parts easily all over the world from various vendors.

Cuisinart Food Processor

To get the best out of the machine, you should always know how to use it properly. You can cut or chop a number of vegetables and fruits which include cabbages, carrots, radishes, apples and even cheese. Cheddar or mozzarella cheese can easily be shredded in this machine.

Cuisinart Food Processor

The first thing you need to do when you want to shred something is to choose the appropriate blade fitting and insert it into the food processor. After that, lock the lid onto the bowl and fix it in the processor. This will allow the machine to run. Cut off the leaves and the other unwanted parts of fruits or vegetables and put these in the feed tube of the processor. Always remember to fill the bowl according to the suggested level; otherwise the contents may seep out, creating a mess that you will have to clean up.

If you want, you can move the plastic pusher to move the food around the bowl. You can use this machine for cutting vegetables, crushing biscuits and crackers for crust making, to smooth sauces and also for pureeing your baby's food. You can use the S-shaped blade for preparing soups. You only need to add broth and vegetable chunks (these can include potatoes, carrots and onions, for example) and turn your machine on for about thirty seconds. For chopping other kinds of food without pureeing it, always use the pulse button rather than turning the food processor on so that you can arrive at your desired consistency.

You can also use your processor to shred nuts with the help of a grinding blade. When you switch on your processor it will chop the nuts into the shape of a ball, which it will then convert into a thin butter paste. You can easily chop almonds and peanuts in it but it might be a bit difficult for walnuts and pecans.

For shredding cheese, freeze the cheese block for 20 minutes, put it in the processor and press the pulse button. It will take only a few seconds. If your processor stops working, you can always install new Cuisinart parts to make it functional again.
